Good Morning Work for 2nd Grade Reading

Have you ever felt like your morning time classroom routines are not, in fact, routines? I have. They were more like my class and I hopping on the struggle bus and headed to Chaos Urban center. 🚌 🏙

After finally determining that enough is plenty, I created a morning time work that would consistently focus on disquisitional content and build a routine for my students (and me!). Then, I could move on to focusing on the rest of my curriculum and instruction.

And then here is why I believe in this forenoon work so much:

1// Routine! Your students volition know exactly what to practise when they come in each morning time. You can focus on all those offset the day teacher duties similar attendance, collecting permission slips, and checking notes from parents. (and any unexpected morning mishaps)

2// Critical Content– Rest assured your students aren't just completing "busy work." They are roofing disquisitional content areas + curriculum y'all might non get address otherwise. (I'grand looking at you lot, Language Standards.)

3// Short & Sweet – The morning piece of work shouldn't take students longer than x minutes. The tasks are rich, only they are presented in digestible chunks. Plus, the whole calendar week is covered in 1 sheet. That means fewer copies!

What is included in the morning work?

The ELA Morning Work is focused on the Common Core Standards. Each mean solar day has a thematic structure to embrace language standards (that we often miss!) and enhance vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Meaningful Monday: Monday is focused on making pregnant. Tasks will focus on synonyms, antonyms, vocabulary words, context clues, and making meaning in a curt amount of text.

Text Construction Tuesday: Tuesdays will accept a paragraph related to the time of year (i.e. Earth Day, Thanksgiving, etc.) or a Science, Social Studies concept. Text structure is ane of those tricky concepts that just takes a LOT of practice. That's why we have a full day dedicated to Text Construction. Students will answer a question related to text structure, main idea, or author'south perspective.

Wordy Wednesday: Midweek is all about working with words. Tasks include spelling, shades of meaning, homophones, roots, etc.

Throwback Thursday: On Thursdays, students work with grammar and conventions. I similar to call up of this as throwing it back to when grammar used to be at the forefront of our Language Arts teaching, merely now we're just trying to get it in when nosotros can. (Which is another reason while you volition honey this morning work! ? )

Figurative Friday: Accept y'all ever wondered how to become more than poetry into your upper elementary classroom? Well, I've got the answer for you. Figurative Friday tasks include working with various types of figurative language including similes, metaphors, personification, and idioms. Many Fridays include a poem. Imagine if your students read a verse form almost every single week? ?

Each monthly morn work contains 4-5 weeks of morning piece of work for that calendar month. The morning work is bachelor for the following form levels:

Managing Your Morn Work

Along the manner, many teachers take reached out about how to organize and manage their morn work routine. back to share with yous some arrangement tips for managing your forenoon work routine. And let me tell you lot- this daughter learned the difficult way. As more and more teachers have been using the morning work, one question I become asked A LOT is…

❝How practise you have your students organize their morning piece of work?

So I'thou going to pause information technology downwards for you. These are tips that I've learned and take also been shared with me by other teachers using the morning piece of work.

✅ Option 1// Copy the whole calendar month and make a packet. I spent SO many Monday mornings (because I wanted to exit ~~early~~ on fourth dimension Friday afternoon) at the copy auto trying to go my morning time work ready for the calendar week. What a headache!

Finally, I started using my noggin' and said to myself, "Self, yous know you are going to utilize these every calendar week, every calendar month. Why non copy the whole month at once so you don't have to worry about it?" Well, that makes sense. Merely also, "Why not brand a packet, so yous tin can eliminate some of the papers that are coming in AND since there are 5 weeks, it tin can be a prissy early on finisher job."

I oasis't ever been the best director of time and organization, but I've learned the difficult fashion. I am all nigh finding ways to make our jobs easier and batching tasks such as this. Let me tell you – information technology sure feels good non to be standing at the copier on Mon mornings anymore.

✅ Pick 2// Employ a composition notebook.?If you lot are more of a notebook kind of instructor, think almost keeping a morning work notebook. Y'all can shrink down the pages to 80-85% and and so have students glue them into their notebook. This option may depend on your students considering the fonts shrink and may be as well small for your students.

✅Option 3// Create a folder or binder where students keep their morning work.These binder covers can also be used to keep their forenoon work throughout the year in a folder. Or y'all can just separate between the ELA + Math Forenoon Piece of work. (picture show below)

✅ Option 4// Go Digital!The morning work is being converted each calendar month to a digital format. Then now you can assign the morning work in Google Classroom, Canvas, Seesaw, or other learning platforms. The morning work is in Google Slides and interactive.

The reason I've wanted to share this resource with you lot is that for a long time, I had ZERO morning routine. I was always scrambling to catch some random workbook page for Math, having my students end upwardly something nosotros left off on the mean solar day before, or expect that ALL of my students would be able to beginning the solar day by simply coming in and reading independently.
